On this episode of Your Right to Speak we talk with Ian Green who is a professor at York University's Master of Public Policy, Administration, and Law. Ian talks about ethical politics and its relation to young people. In the first part of the episode Ian discusses the challenges and strengths of ethical politics, in the second he argues that policy makers should have training in anti-oppression to better address some of the stigmas people bring with them when developing policy. Ian also mentions how young people can be better engage in politics.

Pierre-Andre explains what the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program is and the importance of it. There is then a conversation of what the difference is between private sponsored and government-assisted refugees, as well as some of the challenges with the private sponsorship program. On this episode of Your Right to Speak Salvatore and Jenn continue on the topic of sexual abuse. The guest Stewart is a volunteer at an agency called The Gatehouse. Stewart talks about his experience as being sexual abuse as a child and the peer support program that is offered at The Gatehouse that are free. The focus is that people are coming into The Gatehouse to heal. There is talk about the unique atmosphere create in The Gatehouse. For example how a child and adult is given a teddy bear when they come into The Gatehouse. There is also talk how there needs to be more services for man who are sexually abused. Stewart talks about the stigma of how people who are sexually abuse are often thought of as being sexual offenders.

On this episode we talk with Megan, a recent graduate from Humber Colleges Child and Youth Care Degree. Megan talks with Sammy and Josh about her thesis on sections 43 of the Canadian criminal code and corporal punishment. The 3 discuss how children are viewed and how the discourse of a child needs to change to match the current times. The discussion then focuses on parenting and the use of corporal punishment as a parenting tool and the challenges with that. It was also noted that communication with the young person is really important to start moving away from using corporal punishment.

Taking into consideration the voices of young people, the report looks at barriers within the child welfare system. Chelsea discusses why “family” is not defined in the report, the lack of young people’s voice in developing “Plans of Care”, and how adultism impacts young people.

For this black history month episode of Your Right to Speak, Sammy and Josh welcome back past guests Denise and Priscilla. The conversation begins with the meaning of the term black and the impact on young people in the social service system. The discussion then turns to issues the black community faces in the child welfare system. There is also talk around how the system needs to move away from a cultural competence framework, and the need for better ways to understand the different culture perceptive. An interesting point was made that the term neglect needs to be redefined to better fit different cultures. It was stressed that public services and policy makers needs to take into consideration the day to day experiences of communities that policy impacts.
